How to Trade in a Boat at a Boat Show
It is possible for a boat owner to trade in a used boat when buying a new one at a boat show. The boat owner should arrange to have the used boat available for a boat show dealer to inspect. The owner can then negotiate the price of the new boat and the trade-in at the same time.
- Inspect your used boat to see if you need to make any repairs. Clean the boat after you fix it, so it will look good when the boat show dealer looks it over. Take the boat with you when you go to the boat show so you can negotiate the trade-in price.
- Find the value of your used boat by looking online. Search for websites that give boat values and find your used boat. Make sure to include any options or features on your boat in the pricing, so you know the correct value. Print out the pricing report and keep it with you when you go to the boat show.
- Choose a new boat to buy once you are at the boat show. Tell the dealer that you have a used boat that you want to trade-in. Let the dealer inspect your boat so you can get a price for your trade-in.
- Ask the dealer the offer amount for your used boat. Compare the dealer’s offer with the pricing report you brought with you. If the price is lower than you would like, make the dealer a counteroffer for your trade-in.
- Negotiate with the dealer until you decide the amount of the trade-in is fair. Do not necessarily accept the dealer’s offer if there are many other boat vendors at the show. You can always choose to shop at one of the other dealers if you cannot get a fair price. Once the dealer sees that you may cancel the new boat purchase because of the low trade-in offer, you may get a better price for your used boat.
