How to Train Morgan Horses

A Morgan horse is one of the first breeds developed in the United States and has a compact, refined build. This breed is highly versatile and is used in many disciplines such as dressage, jumping and driving. A Morgan horse is intelligent and benefits from positive reinforcement.

Things You'll Need:

  • Halter

  • Saddle

  • Bridle

  • Round pen

  • Helmet

  1. Begin training a young Morgan horse with basic groundwork. This includes walking and backing up. You should also train a Morgan horse to yield when you place your hand on its forehead or haunches.

  2. Train your Morgan horse to walk in circles. Begin with small circles at a slow pace, and advance to larger circles at a rapid pace. Ensure the horse moves at a constant pace and responds consistently to your cues.

  3. Introduce a Morgan horse to tack such as a bridle and saddle. The horse should be able to stand calmly while you tack up. Spend several days walking the horse with the tack before riding it. Morgan horses benefit from positive encouragement such as praise and treats during this stage.

  4. Wear a helmet for safety. Mount a Morgan horse in a pen and instruct it to move at a quiet walk. The first training session should last no more than 20 minutes. Ensure you end the session by praising your horse.

  5. Teach your Morgan horse advanced skills such as bending and extension of its legs for all gaits. These skills are essential for many types of work, such as show riding and trail riding. Morgan horses benefit from performing different types of work so they don't get bored.
