How to Train the Best Bird Hunting Dog

There are many breeds of bird hunting dogs available. However, although they are bred for this task they will still require training in order to become the best bird hunting dog they can be. You will need to be firm and consistent when training your bird hunting dog.

  1. Get your puppy at a young age and begin the training process early so that it has a chance to bond with you during the training process.

  2. Enroll your bird hunting dog in an obedience class in order to teach them the basic commands such as sit, stay and come early on. Knowing these commands will help you to train your dog to be the best bird hunting dog they can be.

  3. Teach your bird hunting dog to get used to water. Your dog may be resistant to water at first, which is normal. Start with a child-sized swimming pool and then work your way up to larger bodies of water to help them get used to the water and learn to enjoy it.

  4. Purchase waterfowl dummies and decoys from your local pet store or online. You will want to have both types so that your bird hunting dog will come to recognize the scent of waterfowl in order to retrieve it later on when you are hunting.

  5. Bring your bird hunting puppy with you when you hunt so that they can become accustomed to the sound of gunfire. If your dog is not used to this sound, it may be scared when you bring it on its first hunting trip.

  6. Hide waterfowl in an area that is similar to the area where you will be hunting. Be sure that the dog does not see you hide these decoys. Then help your dog to find them. Once the decoys are found, reward the dog for a job well done.
