How to Treat Carpal Tunnel Surgery Pain
Severe cases of carpal tunnel syndrome may require surgical repair. Surgery for carpal tunnel requires a surgeon to cut the carpal ligament to reduce the pressure exerted on the median nerve, which runs through the carpal tunnel. Following surgery, specific measures need to be taken to eliminate post-surgical pain and facilitate the healing process.
Instructions
- Have help available for approximately two weeks. There will be certain restrictions on lifting, driving and daily activities.
- Fill prescriptions for medications prescribed by the doctor. Medications may include both a prescription strength pain reliever and anti-inflammatory drug. Take all medications as prescribed to aid in the healing process.
- Avoid lifting objects over ten pounds for six to eight weeks after surgery. Damage to the surgical site can occur with heavy lifting.
- Apply an ice compress to the surgical site throughout the day to reduce swelling and pain associated with post-surgical healing.
- Consume a healthy diet of foods rich in antioxidants and protein. Foods high in protein promote tendon and muscle rebuilding and antioxidants promote a healthy immune system. Avoid alcohol, tobacco, caffeine and foods high in sugars all of which slow the body’s ability to heal.
- Gradually build strength back in the wrist and hand by doing light tasks and exercises. Allow periods of rest between light activities.
- Participate in recommended rehabilitation therapy. A physical therapist assists with recovery and pain reduction with targeted stretches and exercises.
- Wear a splint to protect and stabilize the wrist as it heals. A doctor will recommend the appropriate amount of time to wear the splint, and if it needs to be worn during certain activities. The general guidelines are to wear a splint during tasks that put pressure on the wrist and throughout the night.
- Prevent carpal tunnel recurrence by: reducing repetitive hand and wrist tasks, practice wrist and finger stretches during activity, and use ergonomics to reduce stress on the area.
