How to Troubleshoot a Laundry Machine

Many circumstances could prevent a laundry machine from functioning properly. To prevent injury, always unplug the laundry machine or disconnect it from its power source when performing repair work. Use some tips to troubleshoot a laundry machine problem before calling a repairman.

• Check the power source if the laundry machine does not work.  Determine whether there is power getting to the machine.  Be sure that the machine is plugged in and that a fuse has not blown.  You may also need to replace the lid switch.  If the lid switch is damaged, the machine will not operate.


• Check for clogs if the laundry machine does not drain.  The laundry machine may not drain because of the drain line being clogged.  Clogging can occur from a small piece of clothing getting in the drain hose. You will need to unclog the drain if this is the problem.  If the drain is not clogged, the pump may need to be replaced.


• Check the lid switch if the laundry machine does not spin.  A laundry machine will not spin if the lid switch is damaged, if the pump belt is broken or if the pump pulley is frozen.  Check these items to see whether they are the cause of the problem.  If so, they will need to be replaced.


• Check the agitator if the laundry machine does not agitate.  Many causes could prevent the machine from agitating.  Check the lid switch.  If it is damaged, the machine will not work and it will need to be replaced.  Other parts to check include the belts, the agitator, the clutch and the drive motor. These are all items that can become worn out and prevent the laundry machine from agitating. If they are defective, they will need to be replaced to allow a properly functioning machine.


• Check the distribution of the clothes if the laundry machine is noisy.  Some laundry machines become noisy during the spin cycle.  This means that the clothes may have become unbalanced.  Simply open the machine and redistribute the clothes.
