How to Undo a Steel Line to Brake Hose Connection

A steel line runs through a brake line and other houses, in order to connect each piece together. Although the process is relatively easy, it is important to do each step correctly, because if not, serious problems, such as air in your hydraulics, may occur.

Supply List

  • Drip pan

  • Newspaper (optional)

  • Brake hose (if needed)

  • Fittings (if needed)

  • Brake fluid

  • Open end box end wrench

  • Keys to the vehicle

  • Line wrench

  1. Situate a drip pan underneath the brake line to catch any brake fluid that leaks. You should place newspaper down first, if you are working on floors where brake fluid stains the surface.

  2. Use a line wrench to keep the brake hose from moving. Be careful; if you turn the wrench you will harm the hose and cause serious issues.

  3. Take a wrench with a box end and an open end to dissemble the brake line and the hose connector, by twisting the connector counter clockwise.

  4. Allow the excess brake fluid to exit the hose prior to continuing. Inspect the brake line for damage. If there is not any damage you should continue. However, if there is damage, take apart the hose and replace it with a new brake hose.

  5. Examine the fittings on the hose. If one or both need replacement, unscrew the damaged fitting and remove completely. Replace the fitting with a new fitting, by screwing the new one onto the end of the hose. If both need replaced, disconnect the other fitting from the hose and reconnect a new one.

  6. Verify there is enough brake fluid in the master cylinder by looking at the reservoir. You might need to add additional fluid until the liquid level reaches to the full line.

  7. Evaluate the brake by first turning the engine of the car on. Push down on the brake pedal with your foot. If the brake goes to the floor, you need to bleed your brakes. The brake sometimes feels spongy or soft when there is air in the line, so you want to bleed the brakes in this case also.
