How to Update Cabinet Doors with Glass Inserts

Outdated cabinet doors can easily be updated by simply inserting glass inserts in the cabinet doors. Glass cabinet inserts are a classy addition that cost less that $100 and can be done in a couple of days over the weekend.

  1. Remove the cabinet door from the hinges. Place the removed door on a piece of tarp before removing the old glass inserts that are in place now. Put on safety goggles and gloves before removing any glass. Use the blunt end of a putty knife and pliers to pry out the glass insertions. Place the old glass insertions to the side.

  2. Measure the old inserts to get the dimensions for the newer ones. Travel to the local hardware store and decide on which new glass inserts you want. Inquire to the store about having the newly selected glass inserts cut to size and ask about the option of pre-cut inserts if you have to order the glass inserts from the catalogue. Purchase the style of decorative window film to accompany the glass inserts. Cut the window film to the same dimensions as the glass inserts. The window film will be placed on top the glass inserts the same way one would put wall paper on a wall. Install the window film, smoothing out all air bubbles using a squeegee, a card, or your hand. Let dry per manufacturer's instruction.

  3. Reinstall the new glass with decorative window film using a hot glue gun to glue it to the door frame. Place a generous portion of hot glue in two inch intervals around the door frame. Insert the glass insert and let dry.

  4. Replace the door once all glass inserts are in place and dry.
