Information on Cabinet Makers

Types of Cabinet Maker Hand Tools

Cabinet makers use various tools to create cabinets, furniture and shelving.  Tools are used to build the basic structure as well as add decorative elements.  Different tools are used for different parts of the process, and each tool has its own specific use.

Measuring

Cabinet makers use measuring tools to measure wood before cutting.  The most often used tools are tape measures, levels and framing squares.  Specialized tools are often needed depending on the type of cabinetry.  Laser levels or measuring tools can make measuring and getting perfectly straight lines easier.

Finishing Tools

Planers and sanders are used to create a smooth surface on the wood.  Before making the frame or the trim for cabinets or furniture, the wood must be prepared by creating a flat, smooth surface.  Planers and sanders can be handheld or power tools, depending on the project and personal preference.

Power Tools

For larger pieces of wood, power tools are easier and faster to use than cutting wood by hand.  Drills, routers and different types of electric saws are used to create the frame of the piece and cut larger pieces of trim work.  Specialty tools such as a biscuit joiner help save time over using hand tools.

Hand Tools

Hand tools such as a saw, hammer, chisel and plane provide accuracy and ease of use for a cabinet maker.  Power tools can be used, but hand tools provide better accuracy when working on smaller pieces of wood.

Table Tools

Table saws, bandsaws, planers and drill presses also make cabinet making go quicker with more precise cuts.  These larger tools are used for bigger pieces of food, and not used for finishing.
