How to Use Direct Marketing to Advertise
When you utilize direct marketing, you put your company’s name and message directly in front of potential customers. Although general ad campaigns can be profitable, directly targeting your specific market will generally result in better earnings than non-specific ad campaigns.
- Decide who your target market is. Do some critical thinking and figure out who is most likely to use your product. Unless your service or product is completely generic, you should be able to narrow your market down to at least a gender or age group. This first step is the most important step in the task.
- Search for advertising venues that cater to your market’s interests. If you are a video game vendor, you could advertise on gaming blogs and local arcades. If you are a massage therapist, you can advertise to gym and medical patient crowds.
- Utilize free or inexpensive advertising as much as possible. Paid advertising like radio and print ads typically advertise to a broad audience anyway, so these mediums may not be the best choice for your business. Hand out flyers, send out mailers and work on your word-of-mouth campaign.
- Establish a mailing list. This can be a physical list or an e-newsletter list. Once potential customers subscribe to this list, you can advertise to them over and over, increasing your chances for a sale with every newsletter you send out. Mobile marketing, the use of text messaging to send out advertising, is also a good companion to newsletter marketing.
