How to Use Dog Walking Etiquette

Walking your dog is a wonderful bonding experience that provides exercise for both the dog and you. Walking your dog in public, near other people and property, requires a set of commonly accepted etiquette rules. These should be observed whenever your dog is off your property.

  • Use a leash every time you walk, even if your dog does well with staying by your side. Even the best-behaved dogs can become distracted and suddenly run off. Leashes provide more control in unfamiliar surroundings. In addition, leashes are required by law in most cities and states.

  • Pick up your dog’s waste immediately if it uses the bathroom while on your walk. Never leave dog feces, no matter where it is. This is disrespectful of property and can be health hazard for children and animals. Carry little plastic baggies with you for easy clean up.

  • Keep your dog off of other people’s lawns and gardens. Avoid letting your dog use the bathroom or mark its territory near mailboxes, plants or other objects on personal property.

  • Avoid letting your dog approach other dogs or people. Some people are allergic to dogs or do not care for them. In additional, other dogs may not be receptive to meeting new dogs. When approaching others while walking, it is best to assume they do not want your dog near them.

  • Ask other dog walkers if it is ok for your dogs to meet if both dogs seem excited to greet each other. Have your dog sit while you check with the owner to see if it is okay. If the owner says it's okay, keep control of your dog with the leash while it approaches the other dog.
