Invisible Fence Puppy Training Tips
If you wish to train your puppy for invisible fence use, place flags around the perimeter so your puppy knows where the fence is. Also, find a fence with an alarm to startle your puppy when they get close to the fence. Watch your puppy closely as well, because some dogs will go through an invisible fence without being bothered.
- Place flags around the perimeter of your fence. This trains a puppy by showing them where the invisible fence is. This is important to provide a visual barrier that shouldn't be crossed. Put flags up two or three feet apart making sure the entire area is marked. Remove the flags when puppies are trained.
- Purchase an invisible fence with an alarm system that goes off when your puppy gets too close. Alarms startle puppies keeping them away from the fence edge. Have your puppy walk towards the fence when you first install it until the alarm goes off. This scares your puppy, and it will remember to stay away.
- Walk your puppy near the edge of the invisible fence. Gently pull on the leash when they get too close. This reinforces the idea that the fence is a barrier. Do this every time you walk your puppy, until they learn to stay away from the fence edge.
- Watch puppies closely while they train with an invisible fence. Some puppies will go through the fence with little discomfort. This happens with large dog breeds like rottweilers and mastiffs. If your puppy goes through the invisible fence take off their collar before bringing them back in your yard. This prevents a shock when they come back inside the fence.
