How to Use Forearm Crutches

There are certain situations where standard crutches will not be able to assist someone who needs help. In these cases, forearm crutches may be the best option to get the help needed. They can be easy to use once you are comfortable with them.

  1. Size the crutches before you attempt to use them. This is best to do with the assistance of another person. The crutches must be able to rest on your forearm and the hand rests should be around the waste. By using the buttons on the sides of the crutches, adjust them to give the best fit. It may take several tries to get the best feel.

  2. Place the crutches next to you and allow them to lean on your body. Grab each hand rest and turn the crutches so that you can fit your arm in the forearm holders. Have your assistant strap the crutches to your forearm so that you get a snug fit. If the strap feels constricting in any way, have it loosened before you start walking.

  3. Walk for very short distances when first using the crutches. It is best to have someone walk behind you to steady you if you need it. As you walk on the crutches, make sure that you do not put all of your weight on the hand rests.  The forearm cuff is designed to alleviate some of that pressure, which will help your wrists over the long term use of the crutches.
