How to Use Mindfulness to Treat Mental Disorders
Mindfulness is a practice that is taught by Zen Buddhists. It is the power of taking away the judgment, criticism, and fear of a mental disorder so that the person can overcome it. Not everyone seems capable of this, but by teaching mindfulness to the person with the disorder can help them significantly.
- Know Your Disorder: Knowing all about the mental disorder that you have and the triggers as well as problems that are caused by your mental disorder will help you significantly in dealing with it. Although mindfulness may not be able to cure a severe disorder, it will be able to significantly reduce your symptoms and setbacks by knowing what they are and what triggers them.
- Tell Yourself It's Not Your Fault: You cannot help the fact that you were born with or developed a mental disorder. Some people will get frustrated and irritated with you, but it is mostly because they do not understand the disorder and what you are going through. Telling yourself that it is not your fault is the first step to allowing mindfulness to cure your mental disorder.
- Meditate: Start out small by meditating for ten or fifteen minutes a day. Find a quiet place that you can be by yourself. Sit comfortably or lay down. Focus on your physical body and slow your breathing by taking in deep breaths through the nose and out the mouth. Focus on the symptoms that you have and what triggers episodes for you. While focusing on these, picture yourself in a calm manor when each of these triggers occurs. After enough meditation, you will start to feel yourself be able to handle yourself better each time one of these triggers comes about.
