How to Use Plastic Hair Rollers

If you are a beginner using rollers it is helpful to have a few pointers. Rollers come in different types these days, but plastic hair rollers are very simple to use for rolling hair. Plastic hair curlers are also one of the least expensive types, and can be found at the local drugstore or discounts stores like Target and Walmart.

Items Needed:

  • Plastic hair rollers

  • Bobby pins

  • Comb or brush

  1. Wash or wet your hair and lightly towel dry. Hair needs to be damp to stick to the rollers properly and form the curls. Brush or comb out your hair normally making sure there are no tangles.

  2. Choose from small, medium or large rollers, depending upon the size of curl, and how much curl or waves you want. Many women use a couple of sizes when curling their hair. For example, you might do the top front and sides of your hair in small curlers for tight curls, and roll the remaining portions in medium-sized rollers for softer curls. Small plastic hair rollers produce tight curls with lots of bounce. Medium and large-sized rollers produce a softer, larger sized curl.

  3. Create a part down the middle or the side to make it easier to roll your hair. Dividing your hair into two sections also helps. Use hair clips or bobby pins to hold back the section of hair you are not going to be working with at the moment.

  4. Roll your hair starting from the top where you made the part. Using a comb, take a small amount of hair that can easily fit on a roller. Using too much hair results in less curl and longer drying time.

  5. Hold the hair by the ends in one hand, and attach the roller to the hair, and roll the hair towards your scalp. If you roll the hair all the way to the top you get more curl and bounce. If you roll the hair only part way to the top, only the ends will be curled. Use a bobby pin to hold each roller onto your scalp. Sometimes you may need two clips.

  6. Reduce the drying time by blow drying the curlers on a medium setting for a couple of minutes. You might want to put a hair net over the curlers to keep them in place if you wish to sleep in them. It takes about two to four hours for hair to dry in curlers depending upon how thick your hair is and how much hair you used in each roller. For quicker drying time use a hair dryer.

  7. Check the rollers by touch to see if the hair feels dry enough, and the rollers can be removed. Remove each roller one at a time and comb your hair and style if desired.
