How to Use Print Advertising

Print advertising is still an effective medium to promote a new business, product or sale. By choosing the right venue for your ad and creating great copy, you can increase sales for your business. You don't need an advertising degree to know how to use print advertising; you just need to know what works.

  1. Determine the advertising budget. Obtain several quotes from different publications.

  2. Target the market. Place the ad in a newspaper or magazine that corresponds with the product or business you are advertising. For example; if you are selling baby products, place an ad in magazines for new parents.

  3. Choose to print the ad in highly circulated newspapers and magazines. This will give your ad more exposure for each dollar spent. More exposure means more sales.

  4. Create a catchy ad. An ad should peak the readers curiosity or hold their attention by appealing to their emotions or their wallet. Pick fonts that are easily readable.

  5. Limit graphics to logos or product. A graphic should be specific to the company or item that is being promoted.

  6. Limit ad borders to thick lines.

  7. Use bold type sparingly to draw the eye to the most important statement in the ad.

  8. Color ad are eye catching; however they cost more. Black and white ads work just as well as long as the ad is to the point and clean. Take the "less is more" approach.

  9. If the product is seasonal; be sure to have it ready to go three to four months prior to the season. Begin advertising campaigns accordingly. If targeting holiday shoppers, begin your campaign the middle of October.
