How to Use Walkers

If you need to use a walker, make sure it is adjusted to the proper height for your body.  Place yourself in the walker frame and move it a small distance in front of your body.  Take steps slowly after you move your walker making sure you are confident on your feet.

  1. Adjust your walker so it is the right height for your body.  Find the latch or button on your walker to move it up or down.  Pull up or push down on the walker handles to adjust it.  Stop when your arms are slightly bent when holding onto the handles.  This is the correct position for proper walker use.  Secure the latch on your walker so the handles do not move

  2. Place your body inside the walker frame.  Put both of your hands on the walker handles parallel to your body.  Make sure your walker is secure on the floor before you move it.  Pick up or roll your walker to move it in front of your body.  Move it a small distance, equal to one small step.  This is important so you can keep your balance when using your walker.

  3. Take a step into the walker frame one foot at a time.  Do this slowly, so you are sure your feet are planted firmly.  This is important if you are weak or using your walker for the first time.  Once you have made your first step move your walker again and continue walking.  Rest yourself if you start to feel weak or wobbly on your feet.
