How to Use a Crowfoot Wrench

A crowfoot wrench is used in automotive repair, plumbing and other trades that use a hexagonal bolt head.  This is considered to be an odd tool, which means it is what you need for those odd places that traditional tools won't work.  The tool is great for engine work, tight places under the car or plumbing.

  1. Choose the proper size of crowfoot wrench for the bolt head size.

  2. Attach crowfoot wrench to extension. A breaker bar may be used with a crowfoot wrench if needed.

  3. Attach extension to drill or hand socket. If using a swivel crowfoot wrench, move claw so it is in the proper position to turn bolt.

  4. Move the bolt back and forth to loosen the bolt.

  5. Do not use too much torque or you may strip the bolt. When bolt is loose, turn the crowfoot wrench until it meets an obstacle, then realign the wrench until you can cleanly remove the bolt.

  6. Insert a bolt into the hole of the object that needs tightening. Test the bolt by finger tightening until the bolt screws into the hole. If the bolt does not fit, try another until you find the proper size for the project.

  7. Fit the head of the bolt to the crowfoot wrench. Adjust the angle, if using a swivel head, to facilitate ease of rotation.

  8. Turn the bolt so that it is going into the screw hole until the wrench meets an obstacle.

  9. Readjust the wrench and continue screwing the bolt into the project. Tighten with approximately 30 pounds of torque.
