How to Use a Jewelers Loupe
A jeweler's loupe is a small handheld magnifying device that is used to see small details more clearly. The piece does not have an attached handle like that of a magnifying glass and the focusing lens is housed inside a cone or an opaque cylinder. This tool is commonly used in the jewelry and watch making trade.
How to Use a Jewelers Loupe
- Spread out a towel on the surface you are planning to use. This is done to provide a soft surface in the case that the piece of jewelry falls and will prevent it hitting a hard surface and possibly causing damage.
- Use your hands to open the jeweler's loupe. Some people find it more comfortable to have it in a straight position, but you can have it in any position that is comfortable for you.
- Hold the loupe in the hand on the same side as the eye you will be using to view the jewelry.
- Hold the loupe between your middle finger and your thumb.
- Place your index finger of the same hand in the open slot at the bottom of the loupe.
- Position the loupe in front of your eye, holding it approximately 2-inches away. Make sure it is not too far away because the item will appear upside down.
- Rest one of your fingers on your cheek to steady the loupe.
- Hold the jewelry in front of the loupe to view.
