How to Use a Ribbon While Performing Rhythmic Gymnastics

Gymnastics consist of many types of performances and some gymnast use ribbon while performing rhythmic gymnastic. Rhythmic gymnasts are very graceful, passionate, and elegant and performing with ribbon helps to highlight their skill and talent. Rhythmic gymnastics includes dance and art and using ribbon just adds to there performance.

  1. Choose what type of dance ribbon you want to use for your performance. There are several factors to take into consideration when selecting your ribbon for rhythmic gymnastics. Choose your ribbon based upon the type of dance you will be performing along with the design and colors of the leotard.

  2. Determine what length of the ribbon needed. The length of the ribbon is determined by the height of the gymnast. Having a ribbon to tall for your height would be very challenging to twirl and get into the air if the gymnast is too short for the ribbon.

  3. Decide on the material of the ribbon based upon the feel of it. Ribbon material comes in satin, satin-like or vinyl. The satin ribbon flows elegantly through the air as you do your dance, while the vinyl ribbon can be a little more difficult to maneuver. The vinyl ribbon may also wrinkle a lot easier than satin, but keep in mind that satin material is the more expensive of the two.

  4. Wrap the ribbon up to test the grip of it. The end of the ribbon stick is usually made out of either wood, fiberglass, or plastic. A non-slip material is used to hold the ribbon to the stick, which helps the gymnast have a better grip. The gymnast should hold and wrap up the ribbons stick to make sure it is comfortable for them.

  5. Perform your dance to the music with the ribbon. Draw designs and pictures in the air with your colorful ribbon, such as snakes, spirals. Also, toss and catch the ribbon in the air in all different directions to add even more excitement to your dance.
