How to Use a Speed Ball in Boxing Training
If you are training to be a boxer, or just want to improve your skills, a speed bag can be a useful tool. A boxer can use a speed bag in order to improve their quickness, hand-eye coordination, accuracy and confidence. Speed bag training is one of the most common practices that a boxer uses.
- Use the bag to work on your hand-eye coordination. The speed bag should be hung from your ceiling on a swivel hook. The bag should be just above eye level when it is placed properly. Hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes are important skills for a boxer to have, and a speed bag can help you develop and improve these skills. Use the bag to practice your left-handed jab. Use a rhythm as you pound out your jabs. This will help to speed the bag appropriately. Concentrate on hitting the bottom center of the bag.
- Use the bag for endurance training. Boxing is an intense sport and it can help you become very healthy and fit. In order to build up your endurance, hit the bag for three full minutes without stopping. Take a break for a minute and then repeat the sequence up to six times. A typical boxing round lasts three minutes, so this is a great way to build up the endurance that you will need during a boxing match.
- Practice your reflexes. To be successful at boxing, you must have quick reflexes. A speed bag can help to improve your skills and speed up your reflexes. To do this, add footwork to your exercise. If you are left-handed, you will circle your opponent to the right. If you are right-handed, you will circle your opponent to the left. Practice your footwork and reflexes by circling the bag as you hit the bag with quick, rhythmic jabs.
- Gain confidence in your skills. Speed bag training is a great way to practice and improve your skills and build your confidence as a boxer. Many boxers become frustrated when they begin speed bag training, but they quickly find their rhythm and improve their skills. Stick with your training and your confidence as a boxer will grow.
