How to Value a Consulting Business
Business valuation is a complicated task that is better approached in a step-by-step process. To value a consulting business, determine the market demand for services. Other important factors are the market rate for consulting services and the profit margin after deducting all expenses.
- Examine market demand for consulting services. This requires focusing specifically on the industry and niche of the particular consulting business. Management consulting, healthcare consulting, learning and development consulting, and technology consulting each have their own level of market demand.
- Determine demand by geographic location. Management consulting is in greater demand in a city with large businesses and less necessary in rural areas. Therefore, this type of business would be worth less in a rural environment than in a location with extensive access to corporations.
- Assess expenses associated with marketing. Some consulting businesses sell themselves through word of mouth or because the service is uniquely effective. Determine how much money must be spent on a regular basis to generate ongoing business.
- Calculate the profitability of the current business. This involves considering consultant salaries, travel expenses, marketing campaigns, overhead costs and equipment needs. It also requires knowledge of the market rate for services.
- Determine overall profitability after subtracting expenses from profits. Business valuation is not an exact science. When selling the business, the buyer wants to know how profitable it is or how quickly it will be profitable. Selling a consulting business typically involves a negotiation in which annual profits and the presence of a solid client base are examined before settling on a firm price.
