How to Waterproof Boat Covers
Owning a boat is a privilege that a lot of people wish they had. It is considered to be a luxury item during the hot summer months. Keeping it properly maintained when it is not in use is very important to the life of the boat.
It is highly recommended that a boat be properly protected with a waterproof cover when it is not in use. Some covers are treated with a waterproof finish when they are constructed at the factory and some are not, but they too will eventually need to be retreated at least every five years. This is something that you can easily do by applying a waterproofing treatment, which can be purchased at a boat supply store.
- Clean the cover for the boat following the recommended cleaning instructions from the manufacturer. You should never apply the treatment on a dirty cover because the treatment will not be going onto the cover itself, but will be going on the dirt on the cover.
- Place the boat cover in a well-ventilated area after it has been thoroughly cleaned and allow it to air dry. Check to make sure the cover is completely dry before applying the waterproof treatment.
- Spread the cover out and lightly spray it with an even coat of waterproofing treatment.
- Allow the treatment to completely dry.
- Spray a second coat of the waterproofing treatment to the cover and allow it to completely dry.
- Replace the cover on the boat or it can be stored until you are ready to use.
