How to Wax a Car by Hand
Waxing a car by hand is an inexpensive way to keep the vehicle looking like new. Before the car owner starts the job, it is important to buy the right kind of wax to use. The owner will also need to wash the car before waxing it to remove any dirt from the vehicle.
- Buy a can of wax to use that is appropriate for your particular car. Go to an auto supply store and ask a clerk to help you pick out the right wax. Read the instructions on the can to determine the best way to apply and remove the wax.
- Park your car in the shade and wet it down with a garden hose. Fill a bucket with soapy water and use a sponge to wash the car. Dry the car with some clean towels and then let it sit for a few minutes before you start the waxing job. Inspect the car before you start to wax it to look for bugs or other materials that you may need to use a chemical to remove.
- Work on one section at a time as you apply the wax to your car. For example, you could start with the hood, then move to the roof. Continue to apply the wax as the instructions on the can indicate, until you cover the entire vehicle.
- Put away the hose and the bucket while you let the wax dry. Depending on the wax type and the weather conditions, the car may be dry in approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Read the instructions on the can to find the best way to remove the wax once it completely dries.
- Inspect the car once you finish removing all of the wax. Wait for an hour and then check it again to make sure there is no wax remaining on the vehicle. Store the can of wax so you can use it on the car again in a few months. It is a good idea to wax your car several times a year to keep the paint looking good.
