How to Tile a Floor With Slate

Slate tiles are a popular choice for the home because of their durability and slip resistant properties. In addition, they are available in an array of beautiful earth tones. It is important to make sure the existing floor and the slate tiles are in good shape before you begin.

  1. Choose the size, style and shape of the slate tiles you want to use for the floor. Some slate tiles are thicker than others. Some shapes include rectangular, square and octagonal. You can also cut out a shape the way you want it.

  2. Tear up and remove any old floor covering and trim around the baseboard. The floor structure should be in good shape before you install the slate tiles.

  3. Prepare a plan to keep track of the amount of tiles you’ll need. Include the type of patterns and features you want.

  4. Check all the tile pieces before you begin. Make sure none of them are damaged. Keep the slate tiles near you when you work. This will make it convenient for you to reach the tiles.

  5. Lay the tiles on the dry floor. Use chalk to draw lines perpendicular to a pair of opposite walls so they cross in the center of the room. Start installing the tile in the center where the lines meet.

  6. Pick up a few tiles at a time and use a trowel to spread mortar evening over the area. Press tiles down firmly on the floor. Keep working outward until you’re finished. A sealer can be used if you prefer.
