How to Write Thank You Cards for Money
Some writers make very good money writing for greeting card companies. These companies are always looking for fresh ideas, and you can write straight from your own house. To get hired, you will need to follow their strict guidelines for submission.
- Compile a list of greeting card companies. This can be done by visiting your local store and jotting down the business names on the backs of their cards. You can also write to: Artist and Writer's Market, The Greeting Card Association, 1356 New York Ave NW, Suite 615, Washington, D.C. 20005. Include a letter requesting a list of greeting card companies that hire writers, and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
- Once you have a list of greeting cards companies, you can go online and check to see if their websites list any guidelines for writers. If not, use the list from the Greeting Card Association to mail them a letter requesting their writer's guidelines and how to apply. Always make sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope. If their website has the guidelines listed, you can simply follow those to apply or submit a writing sample.
- Make sure to keep track of which companies you contacted for guidelines, how you contacted them (email or snail mail), and when you contacted them. After they respond, notate that on your records as well. This could be as simple as keeping an index card for each company. Allow two to three weeks for a response if you mailed a letter in.
- Once you have the received their guidelines for writing, you will be ready to submit sample work for them to see. Simply follow their rules for submission.
