How to do Flood Remediation

Flooding is a natural disaster that occurs to many homeowners. Some geographical locations are more prone to flooding than others, but it can happen any place that has experienced prolonged heavy rainfall. Do not start mediation efforts until your area has been cleared by the attorney general or governor.

  • Examine the outside area of the house. If you had to evacuate your home due to inclement weather, you need to be very cautious before entering your home upon your return. Structural damage may have occurred making it unsafe to enter. Assess the damage on the outside of your home first before going inside.

  • Take pictures of the damage. This needs to be done for insurance purposes so that you can support your written damage claim. Photos of the damage often help to speed up the process when dealing with the insurance companies. Also make a list of damaged items and include proof of purchase.

  • Wear appropriate clothing. When doing remediation you need to wear gloves, boots and a mask. You can purchase a mask or N-95 respirator at your local hardware store. The mask will help limit your exposure to the mold that may have accumulated in the home.

  • Wash away dirt and mildew. Use a water hose to clear away the dirt and debris from the walls and floor. Use bleach to clean the walls. Wipe the area dry with a towel.

  • Ventilate the area. Remove all window coverings and open windows to allow for adequate airflow when using bleach and vinegar to clean the walls and windows. Run a fan to help dry out areas.

  • Hire a professional. You will need a professional carpet cleaner who specializes in flood damage to properly clean and dry your carpet. If the flooding is too severe then the carpet may need to be replaced.
