Tools for Flood Water Removal

When dealing with flood water, it's important to remove as much of the flood water as possible. To do so there are several different tools that you can use to go about doing this. Because some of these tools require electricity to operate, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises using them only if an electrician has determined that it is safe to do so.

  • Wet-dry shop vacuums - Use a wet-dry vacuum to remove flood water that's entered the home or other flooded areas. This motorized tool suctions water from the floor and carpeting into a wet recovery tank.

  • Flood Water Extractors - Flood water extractors can be used for pumping water from basements and for suctioning water from carpeting and the pads beneath. They are available in varying sizes and depending on the size and power of the unit can extract gallons of water per minute. For example, a smaller extractor may pump out 10 gallons of flood water per minute while a larger one may pump out 40 gallons per minute of flood water and debris.

  • Sump Pumps - A sump pump is a unit that is put in the basement of a home that will pump up any water that's flooded the basement and sends it outside. Some may require electricity to run while others use the pressurized water from the home.

  • Carpet and floor dryers - These types of dryers use large amounts of air to dry out and remove any remaining flood water after it has been pumped out or extracted.

  • Squeegee - Floor and heavy-duty squeegees can be used for pushing standing flood water from surfaces.
