Information on Burglar Alarms

Burglar alarms are designed to alert residents and security monitoring services of an intrusion. They often consist of sensors, a speaker alert system, a monitoring system, a control panel and cabled or wireless connections. They monitor the door, windows and other points of entry. Some alarm systems serve one function while others have a combination of uses including surveillance.

Functions

There are several factors to consider when deciding on a burglar alarm system. Consider the size of the home, the number of entryway doors and windows and the garage door. The system has to effectively monitor all of these areas and send the information back to the control panel. The control panel sounds the alert system and alerts the alarm monitoring service. The monitoring service alerts the local authorities about the security breach in the home.

Types

Burglar alarms come in many different models and types. The systems can be categorized into three main groups, wireless alarms, self-contained alarms and the hardwired systems. The wireless systems are controlled using Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other technologies. Many are battery powered and can be monitored through personal computers. Other systems include a contained compact system made to look like a household appliance, toy or other electronic device. The hardwired systems have cables that connect from the sensor to the control panel.

Monitoring and Coverage

Most burglar alarm systems are set up to cover certain areas. The installation is done in such a way that some areas can be de-activated for privacy or other purposes. The alarm system can be monitored from the premises or remotely. In most DIY systems, the alarm only sounds where it is installed. It cannot alert authorities. Some monitored systems can send messages to a monitoring station, which can then respond to the situation.
