Information on Kitchenware
The kitchen is a place where people go to cook, socialize and have fun. In some homes, it is the center of activity where family members interact with others when they come to grab a snack or prepare a meal. To make the kitchen a more functional and comfortable place, kitchenware is often integrated into and included in its design.
Utensils
Cooking and eating utensils are must haves in all kitchens. A cooking utensil is anything that is used to prepare food. Spatulas, scales, scoops, knives, measuring cups and scissors are all common cooking utensils that are found in kitchens. Eating utensils, on the other hand, are used for eating and serving food. Silverware such as forks, knives and spoons are found in most American households, but chopsticks are also widespread eating utensils. Drinking straws, skewers, tongs and toothpicks are considered eating utensils as well.
Appliances
Two types of appliances exist in the kitchen: major appliances and small appliances. Major appliances that are key to any kitchen are a refrigerator and oven. Some homes also feature a dishwasher and/or a microwave oven. Small appliances are more portable than major appliances and tend to specialize in one feature. Toasters, coffeemakers, blenders, griddles and mixers are common small appliances in many households.
Dinnerware
Dinnerware can include both dishes and glasses. Dishware is usually made out of a ceramic material such as earthenware, stoneware or porcelain but can also be made out of wood, silver, glass, acrylic or plastic. A setting of dishware can include plates, bowls and saucers. Also considered dishware are any dishes that are used for serving such as platters, pitchers, casseroles, serving bowls and teapots. Dishware is often accompanied by coffee cups, tumblers, mugs, stemware, teacups and wine glasses, which are all considered types of glassware.
Cookware and Bakeware
In order to prepare food, cookware and bakeware are needed. These types of kitchenware can be made out of metals such as aluminum, copper, cast iron and non-stick or non-metals like ceramic, glass and silicone. Cookware is anything that is used on a stove or range, while bakeware is used in an oven. Cookie sheets, Dutch ovens, roasting pans, stockpots, woks and double boilers are all types of cookware and bakeware.
