Installing a Fountain or Waterfall

Installing Foundation Drainage

Installing a foundation drainage system is a very worthwhile and important investment. It can be a labor-intensive and time-consuming project, but will greatly aid in preserving the life of a foundation.  It can also add value to your home.

Supplies:

  • Perforated pipe (measuring 4inches in diameter)

  • Elbow and tee pipe connectors

  • Gravel

  • Straw

  • Saw

  • Tape measure

  1. Layer gravel along the foundation wall and where the foundation meets the footer. The gravel base should be anywhere from two to four inches thick depending on the
soil type. Extend the gravel base 12 to 15 inches out from the foundation.

  2. Use a tape measure to measure from one corner of the foundation to the other corner. This will be the amount of 4 inch perforated pipe needed. You can purchase this pipe from your local hardware or home improvement store.

  3. Measure and cut the perforated pipe with the saw as needed. You may want to wear safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself while you are cutting the pipes.

  4. Begin laying the pipe on top of the gravel. Use the elbow and tee connectors at the
corners as required. The connectors will help route the drainage around corners or tight areas of the foundation.

  5. Backfill over the pipe with a two to three foot thick layer of gravel. Gravel will help insulate and protect the pipes and drainage.

  6.  Cover the gravel with a 4inch layer of straw. The straw will also help insulate the drainage.
