Installing a Play Area
Installing a play area in your yard is a wonderful way to keep your children happy and active. Getting kids outside running around and playing instead of in front of the television is an important part of keeping them healthy and in good shape. With some planning beforehand, your play area will be a huge success.
1. Think about your child's likes and interests. Some children may like swings and slides; others may be more interested in sand and water, while still others could have more of an interest in sports. If your child or children happen to like it all, there are play sets that incorporate something for everyone. By thinking about your individual child, you will be able to avoid spending money on items that will go unused and invest more in items that will be enjoyed.
2. Clear a space in your yard for the play area. Measure so you know how much room you will have for your equipment. Make the area as flat as you can. You will have to decide on what kind of ground cover you want for your play area. Play sand, rubberized mulch and no splinter mulch are a few surfaces to consider.
3. Go shopping for your play equipment. While a basic set will usually have a couple of swings, a platform and a ladder, you can have additional components such as a rock climbing wall and a small basketball hoop. You can pick up a sand and water table to place off to the side and a trampoline as well. Consider the pros and cons of materials before you make your purchase. Wood will require re staining and sanding, plastics will fade and metals can rust. Each has good and bad features to consider.
4. Check all parts and pieces for safety issues and sharp edges before assembly. Assemble according to the manufacturer’s directions. Be sure to anchor each item as the directions state. Make sure that there is room between the swings and any other equipment so kids can swing and not hit anyone else. Let you or an older child give everything a try to be sure it is working properly.
5. Let any children who will be playing in your play area know your rules.
