Instructions for BBQ Pit

Building a BBQ pit is not difficult; most plans allow for an afternoon with friends to complete the task. There are a lot of ideas to choose from, since this form of cooking is known to everyone on the planet. From a Tandori hut, a BBQ pit smokehouse to an open rotisserie, the plans are to be found for a new BBQ pit.

Items Needed:

  • Brick

  • Mortar or cement

  • Digging tools

  • Carpenter measuring tape

  • Chalk and string for measuring angles from ground area

  • Rotisserie

  • Grill

  • Shovel

  • Brick and mortar tools for laying bricks

  • A steel mesh for a cooking grate

  1. Choose a site for the BBQ. Discover a clean area in the backyard, free from over hanging trees, fences or house roofs, and close to the kitchen to place the BBQ pit. Once you have cleared the area, you will be ready to dig the pit for the BBQ. Before you begin digging, decide on the dimensions of the BBQ.

  2. Decide on the amount of your average BBQ and the cooking type you favor, smoking Tandori, rotisserie BBQ, deep pit smoke or another, like the Pueblo style ovens for baking and BBQ. Once you have a size in mind for the pit or rotisserie, you can measure your width across and purchase the bricks for the actual pit, and grill, and rotisserie.

  3. Start laying the bricks. Determine the shape of the BBQ pit, either from the plans or your own design, square, rectangle, or circular. Your dimension for the rotisserie is decided and the spit purchased. Next have your friends dig the pit and brick and motor the pit to the plans, attach your rotisserie at the top of the BBQ and you are finished.  As simple as that, you will need to wait for the brick and mortar to dry before you can BBQ.

  4. Investigate various ideas for smoking hoods, from the simple wrapping and bury the meat in coals to sophisticated BBQ hoods from Tandori clay to hoods you can purchase, these additions will really make a smokehouse pit from the BBQ pit designs.
