Instructions for Tree Cutting
Trees are beneficial to the environment in many ways. There are times, however, when a tree will need to be cut down. This may be due to age, or directional growth of the tree. Whatever the reason, cutting a tree is a challenging task that requires special tools and skills.
Items Needed:
- Chainsaw
- Steel toe shoes
- Helmet
- Gloves
- Decide the direction to cut the tree. This will depend on the condition of the surrounding ground, the number of trees around the tree being cut, as well as the growth direction of the tree. A general rule of thumb is to cut the tree so that it will fall in the same direction that it grows.
- Reduce the width of the tree. Use the saw to start cutting the leaves and branches from all sides. This will ensure that the tree will have a smooth fall.
- Make triangular cuts. Stand on the same side of the tree that it will fall from.
Mark off 1/3 of the depth of the trunk. Use the chain saw to make a horizontal cut through that same mark on the trunk. Make another cut in a downward motion at a 45-degree angle from the horizontal cut, resulting in a triangular cut in the trunk. - Make a hinge. Stand on the opposite side of the tree and make another horizontal cut 3 inches above the previous horizontal cut. Make another 45-degree cut in an upward angle. These cuts will create a hinge. The hinge will assist with felling the tree in the desired direction.
- Fell the tree. Now that the hinge has been created, continue sawing the trunk until it gives way. Once the tree starts teetering, turn off the saw and move out of the way. Once the tree has fallen, haul the branches and grind the stump if desired.
