Job Description of a Social Services Assistant

Social service assistants are workers of the state that have been hired to provide clients with information about services that may help them with resources that they need. The duties of each assistant can vary depending upon the department in which they have been hired to work.

Duties of a Social Service Assistant

These workers provide their help where needed, they assist with organizing paperwork, clerical duties and helping social workers and other professionals in the department. These assistants help clients with questions about food stamp, Medicaid and welfare applications. They may also be able to clients find other services that are available to them. Many people do not know the different types of services they qualify for and with the help of these assistants may be able to find many things available to them.

Education and Training

Most social service assistants have a minimum an Associate’s degree in Human Services. Individuals can be hired at an entry level with a high school diploma. When being hired for a position with the Department of Social Services, a person should have experience in working with the public and making good decision. Having a passion to help others and being a good listener are also good quality traits to have.

Concerns Working as a Social Service Assistant

Many different types of people pass through the DSS each day. From drug addicted individuals to those who have no desire or determination to do better. It can be very difficult to deal with some of these people. All Social Service assistants have to treat each person with respect and compassion. Although they may see and hear things they are required to give all people fair treatment.
