Knitting Directions for Men's Hats

Men’s hats are a fun project to knit, and there is usually no shortage of recipients, making them ideal for Christmas gifts, birthday presents or even to sell.  Hats are an excellent advanced beginner project, requiring basic knowledge and the ability to knit a continuous circle.

Things You Will Need

  • Knitting pattern

  • Yarn suited to pattern

  • Knitting needles

  • Measuring tape

  • Tapestry needle

  1. Select a pattern.  Many patterns available utilize different stitch techniques.  For a basic beginner hat, look for a pattern that calls for stockinette or garter stitch.

  2. Choose yarn that fits the supply list on the knitting pattern.  Yarn is graded by weight, and worsted weight is the most common, medium-grade yarn.  Your pattern may call for a heavier weight, which will mean a thicker hat with fewer stitches.

  3. Purchase needles that go with the knitting gauge listed on the yarn.  You will see a small box that shows how many stitches per inch are created using a specific needle size.  Double pointed needles are the classic needles for knitting hats, but newer techniques call for circular needles.  Check your pattern to be sure you select the correct needles.

  4. Measure the head of the person you are knitting the hat for.  You will need this figure to determine how many stitches your hat will need.

  5. Knit the hat, following the instructions on the pattern.

  6. Weave in the loose ends once your hat is complete.  This makes the hat look finished and helps prevent unraveling.

  7. Decorate your hat with pompoms or other knitting decorations. (Optional)
