Medicine Training for Emergency Vet

When your pet suffers an emergency, whether it is an emergency illness or an emergency suffered through some sort of trauma, you want to know that the person who is treating your pet is qualified in what they do. Emergency veterinarians can be found in many clinics and hospitals around the country and they work hard to achieve that distinction.

Requirements for Emergency Veterinary Medicine

The main governing body for emergency veterinary medicine is the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC). This organization upholds that standards set for veterinarians who are considered emergent specialized.  In order for a veterinarian to become recognized as a veterinarian of emergency medicine, they must fulfill three things:

  • Completing and graduating an accredited veterinary school.

  • Complete three additional years of intensive training in the area of emergency medicine, critical care and surgery.

  • Receive continuing education on the latest emergency medical training.

This training is offered through ACVECC and according to them, they offer the most up-to-date techniques for diagnosing and treating life-threatening conditions.

Why Have an Emergency Medicine Veterinarian?

When an animal sustains a critical or life threatening injury, disease or condition, they require specialized care. Just as we seek out Emergency rooms and doctors when we are in need of immediate care for serious conditions, our pets need the same. Veterinarians who specialize in emergency medicine have the skills and knowledge to handle this unique crisis’. An emergency situation is much different than a routine examination or treatment of a minor situation.

Another aspect to having emergency medical veterinarians is their skills and training that revolves around emergency preparedness. These skills are most notably used in the ability to detect and help prevent the transmission and spread of zoonotic diseases. Zoonotic diseases are those that can be transferred from animals to people.
