Methods to be Aware of Online Business Listing Scams

Many online businesses want to publish your company’s information for free. They offer you free advertisement, free links to your website and even the possibility of increasing your clientele basis. Adding your businesses to every online company who agrees to publish your information can put your company in a bad situation.

Here are some methods to be aware of online business listing scams.

  1. Make sure that you research the company you plan to use. Check other websites and blogs. If the company has done something wrong in the past, you should be able to find it online. Use a reliable search engine, such as Google, Yahoo or Ask, to verify the company and its practices. You should be able to find out if the company has been involved in any lawsuits and what steps they have taken to improve their practices.

  2. It is important that you do not give out all your pertinent information to everyone who asks for it. The company might try to scam you. Instead, when you first list with a website, give only basic information like your business’s name and website. Wait to see how the website functions before you add your address and phone number. Take your time and make sure your listing is beneficial for your company. You want the listing to improve your business not cause you problems in the future.

  3. Make sure that you are not agreeing to allow a company to sell your business name, phone number or client’s names to outside sources. Many times companies will allow you to post business information for free online only because they use your information to solicit additional sales. You want your listing to benefit your business, not give you a bad reputation.

  4. Just because you are getting space on the Internet, does not mean that space is being used wisely. You want to list with reputable companies that will build the trust between you and potential clients. It is better to list with only a few good business listings rather than get caught up in hundreds of bad listings.

  5. If you find the right businesses to list with, you will soon see the positive increase of sales and customers. Find a listing site you can be proud to refer your clients to and brag about your membership. Look out for the bad sites, but there are always some good sites that will help the success of your business.

  6. Contact the Better Business Bureau. The BBB should have a list of companies that are involved in online scams. You can also check to see if the company has had any reports or violations of specific state codes. The BBB is a reliable source for protecting your company against online scams.

  7. Check the online verification site called Snopes. This site can verify many companies who have been involved in online scams. When you go to the Snopes site, type in the company’s website site address and/or specific name to see if any myths or truths are revealed about their online practices. Sometimes companies get a bad reputation and then change their practices. This site will be able to inform you of such changes.
