Perfect Bound Book Printing

There are several ways to bind a printed book, and the advancement in modern technology has led to more methods of book binding. However, the popularity of perfect bound books which began many decades ago has not faded. Almost anyone can produce a perfect bound book.

Significance

The first mass-produced and popular perfect-bound books were paperbacks, which were produced around the early 1930s. By the 1950s the paperbacks had gained widespread popularity. The reason this happened was because they were cheaper to produce and easily affordable, and as a result a secondary market for hardcover books emerged.

Considerations

A perfect bound book can be produced using a desktop computer, but the use of glue and page presses are still needed to complete the project. To do this, lay out the book and do the design in the computer, then print to sheets of paper. Place the signatures in the proper order and place them in a vice or press that pushes them together while allowing the signature spines to be exposed. Put glue on the spines and then affix the cover. Take the book with the cover attached, and place it in the press or vice for a while to allow the glue to dry.

Benefits

After the book is perfect bound, it needs to get face-trimmed. This is accomplished by the use of a face-trimming machine. It helps to give a professional-looking perfect bound book. If you are doing perfect binding at home, and don't have a face-trimming machine at home, you can pay a local printer who does face-trimming to do it for you. This is cheaper and less expensive than purchasing the machine.
