Proper Diet for Congestive Heart Failure Patients

If you have congestive heart failure, your doctor will most likely prescribe a change in your diet. Although CHF is incurable, its symptoms can be eased with a good diet plan. The diet change will not decrease the flavor of your foods. You can still enjoy flavorful and delicious meals without the risks of aggravating your health.

Sodium Substitutes

Reducing your sodium intake is generally the first thing your doctor may order. Your doctor makes this change for a good reason. The more salt you ingest, the more fluid your body makes to balance the excess. People with congestive heart failure tend to retain water. This leads to swelling or edema in the upper and lower extremities. Lowering your salt intake helps minimize swelling.

Good salt substitutes are:

  • Spices that include parsley, oregano and garlic

  • Lemon, pineapple and orange juice (excellent for saute dishes)

  • Ground pepper for added flavor

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruit contains natural sugars that add flavor to dishes. You can also eat fresh fruit as snacks or dessert. Apples, oranges and other varieties can replace sweets with high fructose syrup and unnatural sugars.

A diet that contains a variety of vegetables can add protein, vitamins and minerals to your daily meal plan. Try eating vegetables like potatoes to regulate potassium in your body. Potassium is a nutrient that regulates the fluids in your organs and blood; however, it can be lost due to medications. If your doctor prescribes a diuretic, a medication that decreases fluid in the body, you may need extra potassium to replenish the loss.

Preparing Your Food

Your diet change may require you to change how you prepare your food. Grilled, baked and broiled meats and vegetables are ideal for congestive heart failure patients. These cooking methods do not require the use of saturated fats and oils that can further clog up your arteries and blood vessels. Also try steaming your meals to maintain their nutrients.
