Remedies for Mold in a Basement
Mold can cause problems to a home as well as to the people and pets residing in the home. Possible problems from mold exposure are breathing problems, infections and a big decrease in the immune system. It is important to remove the mold when symptoms are first noticed to minimize health issues by following specific guidelines.
- Finding mold in a basement is not difficult because mold spores that are floating in the air require a moist surface to grow. Check any surfaces that contain moisture such as corners, behind the water heater, and along the outside perimeter of the entire basement. Windows that are in the basement are prone to leaking from the moisture of the ground. If the basement is finished and has carpet, look under the carpeting as well.
- When removing the mold from the basement, it is crucial to use certain safety precautions to protect yourself from harm. Always use a mask to cover the face and nose when dealing with any kind of mold. Wear gloves and clothing that covers the entire body, and place any items that show mold exposure in plastic bags. Items that are washable do not need to be disposed of, but must be washed in hot water and bleach.
- Cleaning areas where mold was located is important after the moldy objects are removed. Use ½ cup of bleach to one gallon of hot water and spray any surface near the mold to kill any remaining mold spores. Use a toothbrush dipped in the bleach solution to clean small crevices. Dry all of the surfaces in the basement using either towels or fans to prevent new mold.
