Roofing Supplies Checklist

Roofing can be extremely easy if you have the correct materials and some basic knowledge of roofing. The most important thing about roofing is making sure that you are safe and know all of the safety rules before you start working on a ladder or high roof.

Safety: Have someone else work with you when you start roofing. This is going to make the environment safer and will make the job go faster. On a steep roof, you are going to need a harness and safety rope that is tightly fastened to the top of the roof. You should tie the rope around the base of the chimney or a cleat that is secured to the roof. Wear some sturdy shoes that will not slip and heavy gloves. Wear sunglasses and a hat to make sure that you will not overheat and get sunburn.

Tools: You should have a shovel or a shingle remover to remove the old shingles. The shingle remover looks similar to a shovel, but in the end of the blade it has notches to catch the heads of the roofing nails and pull them out easier. You are going to need nails and a hammer to nail in the new shingles. You should also have a utility knife to cut the shingles. To correctly position the new shingles, you should probably have a tape measure.

Materials: You might be able to install new shingles on top of the old ones, depending on the condition of the old shingles. This would save you some time and trouble of taking the older shingles off. If the old shingles are degrading, you will have to take them off. You will have to replace the tar paper of it is old and damaged. You are going to need to replace the roof sheathing if it is damaged or rotting.
