Safest FDA Approved Prescription Eyewear
All prescription and UV-protected frames and lenses sold in the United States must be tested according to FDA set standards. Eyewear such as safety glasses and sunglasses do not have to meet FDA standards. The most common FDA safety approved prescription lenses are plastic, glass laminate and polycarbonate.
Quality
The quality of safety resistant plastic lenses can be vary. Plastic lenses are not automatically impact resistant. However, good quality plastic lenses are in the market. Eyeglass dealers should state that the lenses are FDA approved. A warning to consumers is just because the lens is made of plastic, it does not mean it has been FDA tested.
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate lenses, because of their shatterproof and lightweight qualities are the most common FDA approved prescription eyewear. Polycarbonate has great resistance qualities and is used mostly for children and for sporting activities. Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic, that is made into protective glasses through a process called injection molding. It is of such quality resistance that it is used in aerospace technology.
Glass Laminate
While the traditional eyeglass can be easily shattered and does not meet FDA guidelines, glass laminate eyeglasses can meet such standards. A thermoplastic coating on the lens reduces the chance of shattering. While not as resistant as polycarbonate lenses, glass laminate lenses offer more protection than non-laminated eyeglasses.
Eye Safety
Eye safety is very important so when purchasing prescription eyewear, you should only use a reputable dealer. Research all outlets, including on line, to be sure you are comfortable with the choice you make.
