Salt Water VS Chlorine

What is the difference between salt water and chlorine? When talking about this subject you are probably wondering which one is better for your swimming pool. With that in mind, there are several differences to consider when deciding on which system is right for you.

Salt water and chlorine are used to clean swimming pools. Before you decide which one you'd like to use, you will need to take a look at both of them.

SALT WATER

  • With a salt water swimming pool, you simply put salt into the cleaning system and it will naturally create the chlorine for you.

  • It inhibits algae naturally.

  • Swimming pools with salt water are less likely to cause red, burning eyes or dry, itchy skin.

  • Salt water is easier on fabric so swimwear won't fade or wear over time.

  • Systems that use salt water cost more initially but in the long run they are less expensive.

CHLORINE

  • With a chlorine pool, you are going to have to physically add the chlorine chemicals by yourself.

  • Chlorine fights algae with harsh chemicals.

  • Red, burning eyes and dry, itchy skin are common when using chlorine systems.

  • Swimwear will fade and deteriorate with time.

  • Chlorine systems cost less in the beginning but it can get costly buying the chemicals over time.

Remember when choosing between salt water and chlorine, neither are maintenance-free. The water balance of your pool still needs to be tested and adjusted regularly.
