Saltwater Pier Fishing Techniques
Fishing from an ocean pier can be one of the most relaxing hobbies. On a sunny morning you can set out your lines, sit back on a bench or chair and crack open a good book while waiting for the fish to bite. When fishing from a saltwater pier there are several techniques to make your experience memorable.
Wear Proper Attire
Nothing will ruin a fishing trip like dressing inappropriately. In the summer you should wear shorts and a t-shirt with close-toed shoes. In the winter you should wear long pants, jacket and water resistant boots. You will be on a pier where ocean spray or large waves can sometimes come over the edges. wear layers and bring rain gear to keep dry.
Bring Proper Gear
Since you will be saltwater fishing you need fishing rods and reels able to stand up to the rigors of saltwater fish. Saltwater fishing rods are usually thicker and made of steel. The line is also thicker and able to withstand the weight of an ocean fish. Many people find that live bait works best. Ocean fish do not usually hunt using sight, instead they will use sound vibrations and smell to find their food. Ask the local bait shop what bait seems to be getting the most fish.
Know When to Fish
You may want to start fishing in the early morning. When the sun gets hot, the fish will go under the pier to seek shelter from the sun. Try casting underneath the pier to get the best fish. The advantage of pier fishing is that you can move from shallow to deep water fairly quickly. Try fishing in a variety of areas for the highest yield.
