Specifications of Sledgehammers
Weight
You can find number sledgehammers in many different weights. The application it will be used for depends on the weight of the tool. Some of them can easily weight 7 pounds up to 16 pounds. The weights are increased by two as the weight increases. Longer handles are usually attached to sledgehammers that are heavy and large. There are also smaller sledgehammers that have large heads. These are much easier to handle and use.
Handle Material
Most sledgehammers are made with wooden handles. There are other handle materials available such as fiberglass and steel. The fiberglass handles are made to absorb most of the impact while creating little vibration. There are not many handles made with steel. Fiberglass handles are much better because they do not split and crack as much as wood handles. The handles made with fiberglass are not perfect because at times they can shatter. If you want stability and comfort while gripping the tool, there are soft grips that can be added to the handle.
Purchase for Intended Purpose
Sledgehammers are made with different features. Some are made with soft metals such as brass while others are made with stone. They should be for the applications they are intended for. Some of the tools such as roofing hammers are specifically made for specific applications and should not be used for anything else. Large sledgehammers are used for demolition work and small sledgehammers are used for applications such as body. Those sledgehammers should never be used out of those types of applications.
