Steps to Connect to a Broadband Connection

You purchased a new computer, added computers to your network, or you are ready to dump your dial up connection. Whatever the case, you need to set up a broadband connection. This is a simple process that can be done by anyone in three simple steps.

  1. After purchasing your needed equipment (wireless router and a computer with built-in wireless networking support or a wireless network adapter), you should call your telephone or cable company to make sure you have a broadband connection service. You will then need to connect your wireless router to your computer. Turn off your computer and modem before connecting your wireless router to your modem. Now, connect your router to your modem and to your computer.

  2. The second step is configuring your wireless router. Once everything is connected, turn your computer on. Your system will find the new connections. Open Windows Explorer (or your Internet connection) and follow the instructions that came with your router. Each brand has a specific plan and password to configure the router. After making these connections online, it is safe to unplug your router from your computer.

  3. Finally, you will need to connect your computer to the wireless network. If your computer already has a wireless networking system, you will just need to follow the prompts after rebooting your system. If you do not have a built in wireless networking system, you will need to insert the wireless network adapter. Again, follow the specific instructions for your particular adapter. Be sure to insert the adapter before turning on the computer. When your computer starts up, it will recognize the new equipment and walk you through the set-up steps.
