The Duties of a Dermatology Medical Assistant

Dermatologists need medical assistants who can work well with patients and other staff members. They also need assistants who can remain calm under stressful situations while maintaining patient confidentiality. These medical assistants must be qualified and skilled in order to successfully complete all duties assigned to them on a daily basis.

Patient Interaction

The most important duty of trained dermatology medical assistants is getting along with patients. The assistant is the first person the patient sees when they enter the facility. Patients make their decision on whether or not they like the office based on this interaction. Medical assistants should be friendly, professional and sincere when greeting all patients they treat.

Back Office

All dermatology professionals need to have in-depth back office skills. These skills begin with vital signs, patient in-take and treatments. Knowing how to take and record blood pressure, pulse and respiration is critical in patient care. The dermatologist depends on accurate information when he arrives to see the patient. This is important if the patient is taking medications for their disorder or preparing for a procedure.

Documentation and Charting

It is the medical assistant's duty to place all patient information into the computer or chart. Since most patient charts are kept electronically, the assistant needs to know how to correctly enter doctor findings, medication updates and other pertinent information into the system. The assistant must also follow up on any instructions given by the dermatologist to the patient. She must make sure the patient understands how to take their prescribed medications, when to arrive for the next appointment and what to do in case of an emergency.
