Tips for Earthenware Care

Earthenware is a type of ceramic cookware that is finished with a glaze and comes in a variety of sculpted and decorative designs. Although earthenware is not as smooth as China, it is durable and resilient. With proper care, your earthenware will provide years of usefulness and enjoyment.

Clean earthenware properly

You can clean your earthenware by using warm water and soap. Do not soak your earthenware; it is not needed since earthenware is coated with a finish that is meant to keep food from staining or clinging to the cookware. Never use scouring powders or hoarse scours, as they will damage the glaze on the earthenware. Soak the earthenware for 1 to 2 minutes and if there is trouble removing food from the dish, use a mesh rag for removal.

Avoid sudden temperature changes

Never place hot earthenware in cold environments or vice versa for example, give your hot earthenware time to cool before immersing it in water. The glaze on the earthenware can become damaged or the earthenware could crack if there are sudden temperature changes.

Handle with care

It is important to carefully handle your earthenware as it is ceramic and can break easily. Watch how you store your earthenware and be careful of stacking earthenware on other items since it can easily fall and break.

Use correct utensils

Only use wooden and rubber utensils with your earthenware; metal utensils can scratch the glaze ruining the earthenware. Wooden and rubber utensils will not eat through the finish of the earthenware.
