Tips for Using a Roadside Service Membership

A roadside service membership, whether through an automobile association or your auto insurance company, can provide valuable assistance at a time when you need it the most. If you find yourself needing roadside assistance service, there are several things you should keep in mind.

  • Check to see if your roadside assistance company has an app for smart phones. The American Automobile Association has an app for the iPhone and the Android. Some insurance companies also have an app that helps with roadside assistance, such as GEICO. These apps are free, and allow you to quickly report a need for assistance without having to wait on hold.

  • Ensure that you pay your membership fee or premium on time. If you don’t, you may not be able to get service when you need it. If you find yourself needing roadside assistance and your account is not up to date, call the roadside assistance toll-free number anyway. They may allow you to make a payment over the phone.

  • Be as descriptive as possible when you are calling for assistance. Your tow truck driver will need as much information as possible when trying to find you. Give a detailed and accurate description of your car. Find out what the nearest intersection to you is. Describe any landmarks that are near your vehicle. All of these are important to guiding your driver to your car.

  • Turn on your hazard lights and move your vehicle to a location where it will not impede oncoming traffic. Try to maneuver your car in such a way that a tow truck can easily pick it up when they arrive.
