Tips on Cleaning Clogged Drains on Your Own
Clogged kitchen sinks are due to a gradual buildup of grease, gunk and food. These items becomes stuck in the drain causing the water to backup. There are several ways of unclogging a sink. It’s important to know specific tips and methods to unclog your kitchen sink. This will save you time and money rather than hiring a plumber.
- Combine 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup of baking soda in a cup. Pour the solution down the drain.
- Allow the solution to work for 10 minutes. Run hot water down the drain. This will remove remaining items. If the water runs freely, the clog has been removed. If the water is backed up, try another method.
- Fill the sink with water and plunge with a standard plunger. Push the plunger handle up and down to create a suction that can dislodge the clog and allow the water to drain normally. If this is a two-basin sink, plug the other drain with a stopper. This will allow the pressure to work directly on the clog.
- Pour a liquid or a foaming drain cleaner down the clogged sink as a last resort. The chemicals will dissolve the clog. Allow the cleaner to work for a specific amount of time per the manufacturer’s instructions.
